Pipestone County Courthouse History
The courthouse is a major local feature. The official history says county business moved through several Pipestone locations before the 1901 courthouse. George Pass of Pass & Schippel of Mankato designed the building, and C.H. Peltier of Faribault bid $45,175 to build it. Construction funding became a legal issue, yet the December 1901 term of court met in the finished courtroom.
The building uses Sioux quartzite, has a bronze Justice figure on the dome, and includes a limestone Civil War foot soldier monument honoring 201 named veterans of the Civil and Spanish American Wars.
